Phranakhon Rajabhat University was the first teacher production institute in Thailand, established by His Majesty King Chulalongkorn.Chulachomklao under the name of “Secondary School Teacher Training School" on October 12, 1949.  The School was located at the Suan Mali Nursery, Bamrung Road and was under the supervision of the Department of Education, Ministry of Justice. Its responsibility was to produce teachers to support the expansion of the new bureaucracy. Mr. Green Rod was the first principal. In the first year, there were 3 students: Mr. Nokyoong Wisetkul (Phraya Surintra), Mr. Boonrut Sethabut (Phraya Bhirompakdee) and Mr. Sum
          On May 15, 1918, the “Secondary School Teacher Training School” was renamed to the "Primary School Teacher Training School" offering a 2-year primary school teaching courses for students graduated from high school and certified primary school teachers. As for the secondary school teachers, they were transferred to Suan Kularb High School,Wat Debsirin High School, and Wat Pathum Konga High School.
          In 1934, the "Primary School Teacher Training School" had changed its name to “Phranakhon Primary School Teacher Training School.”
          In 1947, the name was changed to “Phranakhon Teacher Training School." This school had offered a 3-year course for anyone who would like to be certified as a primary school teacher.
         On June 1, 1956, the School was moved from Chandrakasem Palace to the place located right behind Wat Phra Si Mahathat at 3 Moo 6, Chaengwattana Road, Tambon Anasarn, Amphur Bang Khen, Phra Nakhon.
         On May 1, 1966, the Ministry of Education has promoted Phranakhon Teacher Training School to " Phranakhon Teacher College". The College had offered a 2-year courses in Higher Diploma Level. Also, it had offered courses in industrial arts, such as mechanic, electrical, metal, construction and porcelain works. Later in 1969, more courses had been offered.
         In 1974, Phranakhon Teacher College, together with Phranakhon College of Education, had offered a College Teaching Courses using the curriculum used by the College of Education. Any High Diploma graduates or 2-year Diploma graduates would be accepted to this college to pursue their Bachelor degree.
         On February 14, 1975, the Teachers College Act was enacted. As a result, the Phranakhon Teacher College was allowed to offer undergraduate degree. Students who had studied the Higher Teacher Curriculum since 1974 would obtain a Bachelor of Education degree.
         In 1980, the college had offered a 4-year undergraduate courses in education for the first time. 
         In 1984, the Teachers College Act (No.2), which was the amendment from the previous one, was in act. Therefore, Phranakhon Teacher College had offered 3 more courses besides teaching courses which were courses in Education, Science and Liberal Arts.
         On January 25, 1995, the Phranakhon Teacher College had changed its status to “Rajabhat Phranakhon Institute” under the Rajabhat Institutes Act BE 2538 (1995) by His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej. His Majesty had graciously granted the royal seal to be used as the symbol of the institution
        Later, on June 15, 2004, Phranakhon Rajabhat Institute had become a juristic person in accordance with the Rajabhat University Act BE 2547 (2004). It was renamed to "Phranakhon Rajabhat University" to carry out mission of being a higher education institution for local development and a Thai university for the liberation. Phranakhon Rajabhat University had offered courses for both undergraduate and graduate students up till now.
